The internationally successful musical DOCTOR SCHIWAGO, based on the novel by Boris Pasternak and known for its outstanding movie version with Omar Sharif, will be coming to Gmunden on April 11th, 2019.

Story
A love in times of the Russian Revolution: Yuri Andreyevich Zhivago, who grew up as an orphan in a respected house at the time of the Russian Tsarist Empire, soon became a politically independent poet and doctor between the fronts of two burgeoning movements. However, Zhivago soon feels attracted by the secretive Lara Guichard, to whom, however, two other men lost their hearts: Pasha Antipov, leader of the Red Army and Lara's husband, as well as the patronizing lawyer and friend of Guichards, Victor Komarovsky.
background
The novel by Boris Pasternak, completed in 1956 in the Soviet Union, was first published in Italian translation by the Milanese publisher Feltrinelli in November 1957, as the content of the novel about communist movements was an affront to the prevailing government and has initially been banned in Russia. A Russian original edition, sponsored by the Central Intelligence Agency, was published by The Hague Mouton Publishing House in August 1958 and soon spread to the black market in the Soviet Union. The Swedish Academy awarded Pasternak the Nobel Prize for Doctor Zhivago in the same year, but he did not accept it. Two years later, Pasternak died and could not live to see the unstoppable world-wide success that his novel achieved with the 1965 film adaptation of David Lean starring Omar Sharif and Julie Christie.
the musical
The musical originally premiered in 2006 under the name ``Zhivago`` at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, California. Successful productions in Australia, Korea, Poland, Sweden and Germany followed. In Gmunden, this outstanding work is now experiencing its Austrian premiere. The music was written by the composer Lucy Simon, who also created the music to ``The secret garden``.
