Vincent van Gogh, the Musical
Music by Gisle Kverndokk / Libretto by Øystein Wiik
Idea and Editing by Inger Schjoldager and Øystein Wiik
German by Siegfried Weibel
The musical tells the exciting as well as turbulent life of the painter Vincent van Gogh. Even though had trouble selling his paintings during his lifetime, today his work continues to break new price records.
Driven by his emotions, the lateral thinker and visionary – Van Gogh – lives through situations in which happiness and dramatic setbacks are closely connected.
His own inner conflict and repeated social failure may have been the driving forces behind his unique oeuvre. The extraordinary luminosity of his paintings also shows his courage for life. Vincent van Gogh is still one of the most interesting and multi-layered figures in art history today, and is surrounded by various myths.
The Dutch painter is regarded as one of the founders of modern painting. According to current knowledge, he left behind 864 paintings and over 1000 drawings, all of which were made in the last ten years of his life. Vincent van Gogh had an extensive correspondence, especially with his brother Theo, who contains a wealth of references to his paintings and is himself of literary rank. Van Gogh’s main work, which is stylistically classified as post-Impressionism, had a strong influence on subsequent artists, especially the Fauves and the Expressionists.
